1949 – The extensive deportation campaign known as March deportation is conducted in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to force collectivisation by way of terror. The Soviet authorities deport more than 92,000 people from the Baltics to remote areas of the Soviet Union.
1957 – United States Customs seizes copies of Allen Ginsberg’s poem “Howl” on obscenity grounds.
1957 – The European Economic Community is established with West Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg as the first members.
1958 – Canada’s Avro Arrow makes its first flight.
1971 – Bangladesh Liberation War: Beginning of Operation Searchlight by the Pakistan Armed Forces against East Pakistani civilians.
1971 – The Army of the Republic of Vietnam abandon an attempt to cut off the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos.
1975 – Faisal of Saudi Arabia is shot and killed by a mentally ill nephew.
1979 – The first fully functional Space Shuttle orbiter, Columbia, is delivered to the John F. Kennedy Space Center to be prepared for its first launch.
1980 : The British Olympic Association has defied the British Government and will be sending a team to the Moscow Olympics later in the year.
The British and US government and other Governments around the world have called for a boycott of the Moscow Olympics. Although many governments pressured thier Olympic Atheletes only 16 countries did not compete including The United States, Japan, West Germany, China, Canada and 9 others.
To place it in context 81 other countries atheletes many in defiance of their governments wishes did compete but many as a sign of support against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan marched under the Olympic Flag, instead of their national flags.
1988 – The Candle demonstration in Bratislava is the first mass demonstration of the 1980s against the communist regime in Czechoslovakia.

1953 – U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower refuses a clemency appeal for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
1953 – The Soviet Union breaks off diplomatic relations with Israel.
1956 : Two former members of the British Foreign Office who had disappeared from England in 1951, Burgess and Maclean amid rumors that they were spies for the Soviet Union appear in Moscow confirming suspicians may well have been correct
1959 – The Federation of Arab Emirates of the South, which will later become South Yemen, is created as a protectorate of the United Kingdom.
1961 : Adolf Eichmann ( a high-ranking Nazi and SS Obersturmbannfuhrer during World War II) was indicted today on 15 criminal charges in Jerusalem, Israel. He was convicted in December of 1961 and hanged in Jerusalem on June 1st, 1962.
1964 – Greeks and Turks begin fighting in Limassol, Cyprus.
1968 – Israeli–Jordanian border clashes rage.
1970 : Japan launches Oshumi, its first satellite, and it had made a complete revolution around the earth. This achievement made Japan the worlds “fourth space power”, after the Soviet Union (1957), the United States (1958), and France (1965).
1971 – Eighty-seven countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Soviet Union, sign the Seabed Arms Control Treaty outlawing nuclear weapons on the ocean floor in international waters.
1973 – Vietnam War: First release of American prisoners of war from Vietnam takes place.
1975 : The British Conservative Party has chosen it’s first women leader, Margaret Thatcher and will be the first woman to head any British political party .
1978 – Censorship: China lifts a ban on works by Aristotle, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens.
1979 – The Iranian Revolution establishes an Islamic theocracy under the leadership of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
1981 – Around 100,000 US gallons of radioactive coolant leak into the containment building of TVA Sequoyah 1 nuclear plant in Tennessee, contaminating eight workers.
1990 – Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster Prison outside Cape Town, South Africa after 27 years as a political prisoner.

1947 – Captain Chuck Yeager of the United States Air Force flies a Bell X-1 rocket-powered experimental aircraft, the Glamorous Glennis, faster than the speed of sound at Mach 1.06 (700 miles per hour (1,100 km/h; 610 kn) over the high desert of Southern California and becomes the first pilot and the first airplane to do so in level flight.
1949 – Eleven leaders of the American Communist Party are convicted, after a nine-month trial in a Federal District Court, of conspiring to advocate the violent overthrow of the U.S. Federal Government.
1952 – Korean War: United Nations and South Korean forces launch Operation Showdown against Chinese strongholds at the Iron Triangle. The resulting Battle of Triangle Hill is the biggest and bloodiest battle of 1952.
1962 – The Cuban Missile Crisis begins: A U.S. Air Force U-2 reconnaissance plane and its pilot fly over the island of Cuba and take photographs of Soviet missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads being installed and erected in Cuba.

1967 – Vietnam War: The folk singer Joan Baez is arrested concerning a physical blockade of the U.S. Army’s induction center in Oakland, California.
1968 – Vietnam War: Twenty-seven soldiers are arrested at the Presidio of San Francisco in California for their peaceful protest of stockade conditions and the Vietnam War.
1968 – Vietnam War: The United States Department of Defense announces that the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps will send about 24,000 soldiers and Marines back to Vietnam for involuntary second tours of duty in the combat zone there.
1968 – Apollo program: The first live TV broadcast by American astronauts in orbit performed by the Apollo 7 crew.
1973 – In the Thammasat student uprising over 100,000 people protest in Thailand against the Thanom military government, 77 are killed and 857 are injured by soldiers.
1981 – Vice President Hosni Mubarak is elected as the President of Egypt one week after the assassination of the President of Egypt, Anwar Sadat.

1952 : The US Defense department has released the latest figures on those killed so far in the Korean War, it now stands at 120,269. The Army draft call for the month of December has been announced and it will be 47,000.
1967 – A day after being captured, Marxist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara is executed for attempting to incite a revolution in Bolivia.Che Guevara had created a guerrilla force in Bolivia operating as the ELN (Ejército de Liberación Nacional de Bolivia; / “National Liberation Army of Bolivia”), fighting against Bolivian military when he was captured and executed.
He had been involved in a number of revolutions including Cuba ( Under Castro ) during his life and was still a revolutionary fighter when he died at 39 years old in Bolivia
1969 – In Chicago, the United States National Guard is called in for crowd control as demonstrations continue in connection with the trial of the “Chicago Eight” that began on September 24.
1970 – The Khmer Republic is proclaimed in Cambodia.
1981 – Abolition of capital punishment in France.
1983 – Rangoon bombing: Attempted assassination of South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan during an official visit to Rangoon, Burma. Chun survives but the blast kills 17 of his entourage, including four cabinet ministers, and injures 17 others. Four Burmese officials also die in the blast.
1985 : The terrorists who had taken the passengers and crew of the Achille Lauro hostage agree to release the hostages on condition of safe passage to Tunisia. The next day the aircraft is intercepted by F-14A Tomcats (stationed on the USS Saratoga, CV-60) and directed to land at Naval Air Station Sigonella, a N.A.T.O. base in Sicily where the hijackers are arrested by the Italians.
1989 – An official news agency in the Soviet Union reports the landing of a UFO in Voronezh.

1979 – Pope John Paul II denounces all forms of concentration camps and torture while speaking at the U.N. in New York City.
1980 – Michael Myers becomes the first member of either chamber of Congress to be expelled since the Civil War.
1984 – 3 cosmonauts return after a record 237 days in orbit
1985: In London and Liverpool gangs of black youths are continuing to fight with local police forces and rioting in areas where racial tension is at it’s worst. The youths are making gasoline bombs which they are then using to firebomb shops in these areas.
1986 – Sikhs attempt to assassinate Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi
1990 – Xiamen Airlines Flight 8301 is hijacked and lands at Guangzhou, where it crashes into two other airliners on the ground, killing 128.

1950 – The United Nations Security Council Resolution 87 relating to Taiwan is adopted.
1954 – The convention establishing CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) is signed.
1956 : The strong arm leader in Nicaragua President Samoza was assassinated early today by gunmen who shot him down.
1957 – Twenty MCi (740 petabecquerels) of radioactive material is released in an explosion at the Soviet Mayak nuclear plant at Chelyabinsk.

1977 : The Japanese government has agreed to the Red Army terrorist demands of $6,000,000 plus the release of 9 terrorists for the release of the 146 persons held hostage by the Red Army Terrorists from an airliner hijacked and now held in Bangladesh. The terrorists had said if the demands were not met they would kill the hostages one by one starting with the Americans.
1988 – Space Shuttle: NASA launches STS-26, the return to flight mission, after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
1990 – The YF-22, which would later become the F-22 Raptor, flies for the first time.

1946 – While riding a train to Darjeeling, Sister Teresa Bojaxhiu of the Loreto Sisters’ Convent claimed to have heard the call of God, directing her “to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them”. She would become known as Mother Teresa.
1967 – The people of Gibraltar vote to remain a British dependency rather than becoming part of Spain.
1970 : The Nixon administration is to enforce a 49 year old import duty law to stop the dumping of foreign goods on American Soil by increasing the import tax paid on those goods to enter the United States .The 1921 Anti dumping Act provides for penalty duties on foreign goods found to be damaging American Industry.
1972 – The United States suffers its first loss of an international basketball game in a disputed match against the Soviet Union at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany.
1973 : Two British Mainline Stations Bombed at King’s Cross and Euston station injuring 13. The IRA has claimed responsibility and this is part of the current bombing campaign in the last few weeks which have included the Manchester city center bombing and Victoria station in London.
1974 – Guinea-Bissau gains independence from Portugal.
1977 – Hamida Djandoubi, convicted of torture and murder, is the last person to be executed by guillotine in France. He was a Tunisian immigrant who had been convicted of the torture and murder of 21-year-old Elisabeth Bousquet in Marseille.Born in Tunisia in 1949, in 1968 Djandoubi started living in Marseille and working in a grocery store. He went on to work as a landscaper but had a workplace accident in 1971 that resulted in the loss of two thirds of his right leg.
In 1973, a 21-year-old woman named Elisabeth Bousquet, whom Djandoubi had met in the hospital while recovering from his amputation, filed a complaint against him, stating that he had tried to force her into prostitution.After his arrest and eventual release from custody during the spring of 1973, Djandoubi drew two other young girls into his confidence and then forced them to “work” for him. In July 1974, he kidnapped Bousquet and took her into his home where, in full view of the terrified girls, he beat the woman before stubbing a lit cigarette all over her breasts and genital area. Bousquet survived the ordeal so Djandoubi took her by car to the outskirts of Marseille and strangled her there.
On his return Djandoubi warned the two girls to say nothing of what they had seen. Bousquet’s body was discovered in a shed by a boy on 7 July 1974. One month later, Djandoubi kidnapped another girl who managed to escape and report him to police.

1953 – Nippon Television broadcasts Japan’s first television show, including its first TV advertisement.
1955 : Emmett Till, a black fourteen year old teenager from Chicago, is abducted from his uncle’s home in Money, Miss. after he was accused of disrespect to a local store owner Carolyn Bryant. He was found three days later, he had been badly beaten and his eye had been gouged out, before he was shot through the head and thrown into the Tallahatchie River.
1957 – U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond begins a filibuster to prevent the Senate from voting on Civil Rights Act of 1957; he stopped speaking 24 hours and 18 minutes later, the longest filibuster ever conducted by a single Senator.
1963 – March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom: The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his I Have a Dream speech
1963 – Emily Hoffert and Janice Wylie are murdered in their Manhattan apartment, prompting the events that would lead to the passing of the Miranda Rights.

The mayor of Chicago Richard Daley calls in 15,000 state and federal officers together with Chicago 12,000 officers to control the streets. As the situation worsened Television Cameras were on hand as Police used tear gas and were beating the protesters including innocent newsmen and doctors who had come to aid the injured . The backlash from these happenings shown on news programmes throughout the country caused a swell of the ordinary American to question what America was doing in Vietnam if that was how they treated their own citizens.
1979 – An IRA bomb explodes at the Grote Markt in Brussels.
