Today in Cold War History for Nov 5
1950 – Korean War: British and Australian forces from the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade successfully halted the advancing Chinese 117th Division during the Battle of Pakchon.
1952 : General Dwight D Eisenhower wins the American presidential elections with the largest number of popular votes ever recorded for a presidential candidate.
1955 – After being destroyed in World War II, the rebuilt Vienna State Opera reopens with a performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio.
1956 – Britain & France land forces in Egypt in reaction to seizure of Suez Canal
1963 : The United States Army began delivering supplies to men trapped in a convoy. This convoy was trapped on the day before despite efforts to free it. This 12-vehicle system was still seized by armed Soviet cars at the Marienborn checkpoint heading towards East Germany.
1967 – ATS-3 launched by US to take first pictures of full Earth disc
1970 – Vietnam War: The United States Military Assistance Command in Vietnam reports the lowest weekly American soldier death toll in five years (24).
1978 : The ruling Sandinista Front who took power during the revolution 5 years ago have won in the first elections in the country. The FSLN led by Daniel Ortega has said he has won with over 70% of the popular vote.
1986 – USS Rentz, USS Reeves and USS Oldendorf visit Qingdao (Tsing Tao) China – the first US Naval visit to China since 1949.
1991 : The body of the millionaire newspaper publisher, Robert Maxwell, has been found in the sea off the coast of Tenerife. After his death it emerged that the Mirror Group’s debts vastly outweighed its assets and £440m was missing from the company’s pension funds.

1957 – Sputnik II was launched by the Soviet Union. It was the second manmade satellite to be put into orbit and was the first to put an animal into space, a dog named Laika.
1964 Lyndon Baines Johnson is elected as the thirty-sixth president of the United States of America.
1964 – Washington D.C. residents are able to vote in a presidential election for the first time.
1967 – Vietnam War: The Battle of Dak To begins. By the end of November, the North Vietnamese withdrew back into their sanctuaries in Cambodia and Laos. Failing to wipe out a major American unit, yet the PAVN had forced the U.S. Army to pay a high price. 376 U.S. troops had been killed or listed as missing-presumed dead and another 1,441 were wounded.
1969 – U.S. President Richard M. Nixon addresses the nation on television and radio, asking the “silent majority” to join him in solidarity on the Vietnam War effort and to support his policies.
1969 : PBS is founded on November 3, 1969, on it’s foundation it takes over its predecessor, National Educational Television
1973 – The U.S. launched the Mariner 10 spacecraft. On March 29, 1974 it became the first spacecraft to reach the planet Mercury.
1978 – USSR & Vietnam sign peace & friendship treaty
1980 – Thirty-four years ago today, President Ronald Reagan famously told hecklers during a speech to “oh, shut up!” The hecklers were never heard again.
1986 – The Ash-Shiraa, pro-Syrian Lebanese magazine, first broke the story of U.S. arms sales to Iran to secure the release of seven American hostages. The story turned into the Iran-Contra affair.
1987 – China told the U.S. that it would halt the sale of arms to Iran.
1988 – Talk-show host Geraldo Rivera’s nose is broken as Roy Innis brawls with skinheads at TV taping
