1948 – Ceylon (later renamed Sri Lanka) becomes independent within the British Commonwealth.
1962 – Russian newspaper Izvestia reports baseball is an old Russian game
1964 – FAA begins 6 month test of reactions to sonic booms over Oklahoma City
1966 – All Nippon Airways Flight 60 plunges into Tokyo Bay, killing 133.A cause for the accident was never determined.
1967 – Lunar Orbiter program: Lunar Orbiter 3 lifts off from Cape Canaveral’s Launch Complex 13 on its mission to identify possible landing sites for the Surveyor and Apollo spacecraft.
1973 – British Army snipers shoot dead a Provisional Irish Republican Army volunteer and three civilians at the junction in Belfast during the ‘Troubles’ in N Ireland
1974 – The Symbionese Liberation Army kidnaps Patty Hearst in Berkeley, California. Hearst is the great-granddaughter of philanthropist Phoebe Hearst, and granddaughter of the late publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst.The United Federated Forces of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) was an American self-styled left-wing revolutionary group active between 1973 and 1975 that considered itself a vanguard army. The group committed bank robberies, two murders, and other acts of violence.On November 6, 1973, in Oakland, California, two members of the SLA killed school superintendent Marcus Foster and badly wounded his deputy, Robert Blackburn, as the two men left an Oakland school board meeting. The hollow-point bullets used to kill Foster had been packed with cyanide.
1974 – M62 coach bombing: The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) explodes a bomb on a bus carrying off-duty British Armed Forces personnel in Yorkshire, England. Nine soldiers and three civilians are killed.
1987 – US President Reagan’s veto of Clean Water Act is overridden by Congress
1980 – Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini names Abolhassan Banisadr as president of Iran.
1988 : Ferry ports in the UK are causing major congestion on roads on the south coast as British Seamen continue their strike without union backing. The strike is because of the increase of cheaper low-cost Third World crews, while making British Seamen redundant .
1988 – Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega indicted on drug charges
