1950 – Korean War: U.S. President Harry S. Truman declares a state of emergency, after Chinese troops enter the fight in support of communist North Korea.
1960 : A United Air Lines DC-8 and a TWA Super Constellation collide over New York City, killing 134 people
1965 – Vietnam War: General William Westmoreland sends U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara a request for 243,000 more men by the end of 1966.
1967 : General de Gaulle in France was encouraging Quebec to separate from the rest of Canada.
1969 : The British Parliament votes to abolish the death penalty in Great Britain, there had been a temporary ban on the death penalty since 1965.
1971 : Two weeks after the Indian invasion of East Pakistan ( Now Bangladesh ) in support of the independence movement, 90,000 Pakistani troops surrender to Indian forces.
1978 – Cleveland, Ohio, becomes the first major American city to default on its financial obligations since the Great Depression.
1978 – Ronald Reagan denounces President Jimmy Carter’s recognition of China PR
1979 – Libya joins four other OPEC nations in raising crude oil prices, which has an immediate, dramatic effect on the United States.
1979 – 4 British Army soldiers are killed by a PIRA(Provisional Irish Republican Army) landmine near Dungannon, County Tyrone. Another British Army soldier was killed by a PIRA landmine near Forkill, County Armagh
1985 – Paul Castellano and Thomas Bilotti are shot dead on the orders of John Gotti, who assumes leadership of New York’s Gambino crime family
1991 – UN reverses ruling that Zionism is racism by 111-25 (13 abstain) vote
