Today in Cold War History for May 5
1949 – The Treaty of London establishes the Council of Europe in Strasbourg as the first European institution working for European integration.
1951-Fighting increased along the Israel-Syrian border with continued artillery, Mortar fire and Infantry attacks across the border between the two sides
1955 – West Germany gains full sovereignty.
1961 – The Mercury program: Mercury-Redstone 3 – Alan Shepard becomes the first American to travel into outer space, on a sub-orbital flight.
1964 – Separatists riot in Quebec
1965 – 1st large-scale US Army ground units arrive in South Vietnam
1967-The first ever all British satellite ‘Ariel 3’ is successfully launched into orbit from the United States.
1968-Following the referendum in Gibralta in which Gibraltar’s voters were asked whether they wished to become part of Spain and voted with a resounding no vote. Spain closes the border with Gibraltar and severed all communication.
1979 – Voyager 1 passes Jupiter
1980 – Operation Nimrod: The British Special Air Service storms the Iranian embassy in London after a six-day siege.

1981 – Thousands mourn the death of hunger striker Bobby Sands after 66 days of hunger strike in protest against members of the IRA not being treated as political prisoners.
